So if you liked this episode, go ahead and leave us a review. Now, I don't know about you. But I was never really good at soccer. I liked soccer, I just wasn't very good at it. I just could not kick a goal for anything. But what I was always really good at was setting goals for myself, see what I did there. So whether it was for acting or anything else, I love setting goals. And I love a good to do list. And what I've noticed in coaching actors over the years is that not many actors think about goal setting for your business. Because let's get real well, many of us we became an actor for the love of the craft the love of performing, right? Not many of us think about the business side of acting. But the reality is that you need to think of yourself as a business. And as an actor, you got to think Well, what do you have to offer? What makes you unique? So if you're not thinking of yourself as a business and setting goals for your business, then you may be holding yourself back from furthering your career. And what happens when our business doesn't grow? Well, as actors, we usually have a day job, right? That other job that we have that's currently paying the bills paying for that weekly acting class, those new headshots. But that day job isn't always our dream career, right? So if acting is your dream career, then we can't just think of it as a craft. We can't just enjoy the creativity, we need to start thinking of it like a profession, a business. And what's the easiest way to get started in your business as an actor setting goals? So let's set some big actor goals for ourselves for this new year in 2021, shall we? Alright, first, I want you to take out a pen and paper or pencil and write down where you are right now in your career this day, right now, put it down, put down the date and write down where you are right now in your acting career. I want you to make a list of all your accomplishments and a list of your actor assets. And what I mean by that is, what sort of assets do you have for your acting career, your headshots, your real, your list of skills. So for example, all the accents you can do at a professional level. Now like I'm okay, get this accent, it's sort of passable. But like if you were put on set, you could sound like an authentic speaker in that particular accent. Or it could be a particular sport that you're really good at, you know, you know what I'm talking about. So your skill set. So make a list of those assets and take a moment just to have a look at what you wrote down. All right, do you want to draw a line through the middle of that piece of paper and make another column I want you to write down where you would like to be one year from now. So imagine it is January 2022. And I want you to write down whatever comes up for you. Where do you see your acting career? Where do you see yourself as a business for 2022 your acting career. So it doesn't matter what comes up, just write down whatever comes to mind, just put it down on the page. Okay, so now let's figure out how we're going to get there. So I like to work in 90 day cycles. So let's travel back 90 days from that one year mark. So it's about three quarters into the year. And I want you to ask yourself, what would I need to accomplish here at this moment to be able to achieve my goals at that one year mark? So it's probably about September ish, almost to the end of the year. You got like another 90 days to go. What do you need to do at this point in order to achieve your goals at that one year mark? Once you've written that down, I want you to travel back another 90 days. So now we're at that six month mark. And I want you to ask yourself again, what do I need to do now? What should I be doing right now, at the six month mark in order to achieve my goals for that three quarters of a year mark, and I want you to write down those goals on your page. Now that we've done that, you're going to travel back again, another 90 days, and you're going to be at your three month goals. And again, what do I need to accomplish at this three month marker to get me to my six month goals? And so once you've written down your three month goals, I want you to travel back yet another 90 days to where we are today. And those are your goals for today. So what do you need to do now? What goals do you need to set yourself up for in order to get yourself to that three month marker for your three month goals, and very important to make sure you've got today's date on there, your starting goal date, make sure you write down the date for your three month goals. Write down the date for your six month goals, and the date for your one year goals. And now that all of that is done, I want you to look at what you wrote down, let it sink in and tell yourself, I can do this, I will do this. I am taking steps each day to achieve my one year goal. And finally, put your goals somewhere where you can see them to remind yourself of your goals remind you to take those action steps to actually do what's on your list. And you'll find that if you follow this goal setting activity, it's really helpful to give you that motivation to do the work to achieve your goals. Whenever someone joins my online American accent program, my students will tell you the first thing I ask them to do is post their goals send their goals to me because I want it to be a reality for both you and for me. So we put it down on the page with the date and we put it out to the universe. And that is what I want for you too. So let's get to work. And let's make 2021 a year to remember a year where your career takes off. And you can forget about that day job and enjoy your life as the working actor you've always dreamed to be. And I've got something really exciting happening right now you can register for my free five day American accent challenge which is happening on January 11.
