To give you a comprehensive overview of this biz we call showbiz. This is the All American actors podcast. We will get started with today's episode in just a moment. But first, I want to thank you all so very much all of my listeners out there for supporting the All American actors podcast, it is very near and dear to my heart, it is one of my favorite things to do. And I am so excited to bring in 2023 with you here on the podcast, I've got all sorts of exciting things coming up for 2023. If you've been on this journey with me through the podcast, it started first, as you know really focused on the American accent for non US actors. But quickly I branched out to speak to a much bigger audience of actors and really tackle some of the insights and really talk about things that don't always get talked about within the industry and bring in some really interesting guest interviews here for you as well. Speaking of, I've got a really great one coming up next week. And if you join me last week, where we talked to Sara Priebus that was pretty fantastic and sparked the conversation that we're going to have to day. And speaking of social media and different platforms. With podcasting, one of the ways we reach a much bigger audience is by ratings and reviews. Now, if you've been a loyal listener to the podcast, and you have not yet left a review, please head over to Apple podcasts, it'll take you 30 seconds, just leave a brief review. And you'll get featured here on the show as well, which is pretty cool. Or you could take a screenshot of the show. Share it with me on your Instagram stories at Katherine underscore Beck underscore that's another great way to get the word out to the acting community to head over here and have a listen. But let's talk about today's episode, tick tock. And I know that just by, you know, having this episode out here that I am going to have some pushback because I find and I would love to hear from you as well. There's a love hate relationship with actors with social media. Do you agree or disagree? You know, actors in my community, I always preach about getting on Instagram and Tiktok and doing all the things but I noticed a lot of hesitation and I get it, I totally get it. Being on social media is not one of my favorite things either. I am a classic introvert. And if I had my choice, I would not have an Instagram or Tik Tok account. But it is the nature of the beast of getting yourself out there and getting visible. So I do also have myself visible on those platforms. But for me, what I've noticed what makes me most comfortable and happy is a podcast and that's why I'm here with you today. But on tick tock, I have to say that I am enjoying it. I do find that I need to be in the mood and to create content. But I'm going to share with you three reasons why I think every actor for sure needs to make tic tock part of your plan for 2023. The first reason is obviously visibility. Now why is visibility so important for the actor for today's actor, very different to when I grew up, and I was just starting out as an actor. We didn't have all this social media. So you didn't have to do all this. In fact, I remember you would maybe write a postcard like we have these little headshot postcards and you'd write a postcard to an agent or casting director and just check in and say hi, or I'm in the show and he would send it in the mail, old school style. But these days everything is so instantaneous. It's all on the internet. So visibility and why it's so great on Tik Tok is because the way the algorithm works is you can reach a very big audience and you can with the algorithm you can really target your ideal audience, I think way better than Instagram and that's definitely what I'm noticing and I'm finding is there was a lot more engagement as well on Tik Tok and with visibility, why that's so important for the actor is, for example, if we take Sarah, who was on the podcast last week, she has gained so much visibility that now she gets casting directors or, you know, people within the industry, offering her jobs and not just as an actor, but also as content creation, this thing called you GC user generated content is very big. And it's a potential for actors to get work. I mean, essentially, you are, you know, performing to a certain degree when you're doing UGC work. So, it's another avenue to make money as a performer as an actor. So why not, you know, when you have a podcast, or you're on Tik Tok, or you're on Instagram, what's happening is you're creating credibility and authority, you become an expert at what you do. So the more that you're on the frequency, that consistency that people see you, they're going to start to remember your name, they're going to remember your face, you're going to start to gain the attraction of people within the industry. And this can be a very powerful thing, especially when not all actors are doing this, you know. So if you can be one of the few that are doing this, it makes it so much easier to get your name out there and to gain some recognition. So visibility is obviously the number one reason why now here's number two, and listen up actors, because almost every time I've had an actor on this podcast, and I asked him for any sort of tips and advice for the actors that are listening, oftentimes what they say is create your own content, make your own stuff. Tic Toc, is a fantastic platform to create your own content. Why? Because you can do it easily, effortlessly raw, it doesn't need to be polished and perfect. In fact, it's better if it's not polished and perfect. And you have the ability to be incredibly creative and rewarded for that. You can tell stories in your own way you can improvise, you can create characters, you can create a series, there are so many opportunities to create your own content, it's not even funny, and you can easily reach people, and they can start finding your content, people that you wouldn't imagine might be drawn to what you're doing who could be potential clients or collaborators. You never know who is scrolling on Tik Tok, and might say, hey, you know what, I really love that person's content, let's bring them in, maybe they could write a show for us. Or we can collab on this particular sketch that they did, this would be a great movie. So creating your own content, obviously, is like one of those things you should be doing. So why not do it on a platform that is bigger than Google right now bigger than YouTube, this is a place to be friends. So get on there, create your own content. All right. And number three is to build a community. So in the past, we might say fans alike a loyal fan base. And, you know, obviously, it's not the most important thing, but we have to be realistic and truthful that you know, some casting directors do look at your following how many followers you have. Now, the number of followers likely will not be the reason why you get cast, or not cast, but every now and then there might be a slim chance that it could be I don't want you to focus on the number of followers. I want you to focus on creating a community, a community that is there to support you in your acting endeavors. And I think that's very important as well, for actors to have that support system in some way, shape, or manner. Whether it's your family, your friends in an acting class in a workout group on Tik Tok on Instagram, you know, you will find a loyal fan base. Of course, you're going to find trolls and naysayers and people that are going to say stupid things. Some of the best advice I once got from my mentor that he got from his mentor was to just imagine that you are and this is kind of a weird thing to imagine. But imagine your body is covered in Vaseline and as those negative comments come your way. They just drip off of you off that Vaseline. So they're not going to stick to your body because he got Vaseline on you. They just melt away they just fall right off of you. And that was something that always stuck with me and I have to say whenever I get negative comments, I look at it and I actually kind of chuckle and I think like that's just so silly and I always As I remind myself that any sort of negative comments that come my way is not a reflection of me. It's a reflection of the person that's making the comment. It's more about them, and not really about me. So building a community is definitely something that you do want to consider as well. So super easy three things, visibility, creating your own content, incredibly important. And building a community super important as well. So when we talk about tick tock, now, if you're not familiar, or you aren't familiar, let's talk about different ways that you could create content, I'm going to just throw a few things out, you can do improv, if you'd like to do improvisation. You can tell stories, you could create your own stories, you could create like a mini series where they could stay tuned for part two, part three, it could be comedy, it could be drama, you could do it solo, you could do it with an acting partner, you could form an acting troupe, there could be like five, six of you that get together and you write sketches. And one of the great and easy things that you can do these days is repurpose onto Instagram onto YouTube. So that helps you reach an even bigger audience as well. The sky's the limit. So my action item for you in this episode is to consider tick tock, if you're not on there, I want you to get on there and create your own username and look me up. I'm at Katherine underscore Beck underscore, so try for a week and just try all sorts of different types of content, see what sticks. Most important, have fun with it, but give it a try. We're coming into the Christmas season, you know, he might likely have some extra time off. And let this be a fun way for you to try it out and just see what happens and see if it's feasible for you to do coming into 2023. Now coming into 2023. Speaking of that, in the next couple of weeks next few weeks, I'm going to be doing some goal setting episodes with you here on the podcast, setting some goals for 2023. I usually like to round out the year with that as we start thinking about where we are headed in the new year.
