Halloween has always been one of my favourite holidays for a variety of reasons.

Trick or treating with friends

Bobbing for apples

Going to haunted houses for a bit of a scare

And of course dressing up in costume.

It wouldn’t be until later on in life that I realised why I enjoyed the costume part of the holiday so much but this year it has dawned on me. One of the reasons I was attracted to acting at such a young age was because I felt empowered by performing as another character. You see, I was a very shy girl, not one to speak up, never enjoyed the spotlight on ME but in character I LOVED the spotlight. I always felt comfortable on stage if I was playing the role of another character.

And so every year I wear a costume on Halloween and it amazes me how each year the character comes to life from the costume. This year I dressed up as Wonderwoman and as soon as I put on my cape I felt confident, powerful and strong. As my kids trick or treated I stopped traffic like a superhero, doing my bit to ‘save the day’ and protect the children from ‘danger’.

So it got me thinking how clothing can help you discover the character. Next time you are feeling  a disconnect to your character try to play dress up. Find a shirt or a hat or maybe even a pair of shoes they would wear. You literally want to walk in their shoes for a while so you can feel how they feel in their clothing.

Sometimes it can be as simple as that to connect to your character….especially if you’re playing a superhero.
