Yesterday I got thinking about some of the road blocks that often happen when we perform. I went back to a time when I was living in Los Angeles and was sitting in a voiceover class. The teacher said something that struck a chord within me. He said, “Sell the feeling, not the words”. Sometimes it takes the right words in the right moment to make a big impact in your life. For me it was this one sentence.

So yesterday I got thinking about this and how it can relate to performing and character creation. Often times when we perform in another accent we lose sight of that connection, to ourselves, to our character and to the other person or people in the room. Try this.

Follow the feeling, not the words. Let your breath, your thoughts, your feelings take you on a journey. The words and the accent mean nothing without the rest. So set yourself up for success and pure connection. The words will follow. The meaning will be there. The accent will be there. Trust your feelings, breathe and set them free.

Hope that helps you out today.

Follow the feeling, not the words.
