Practice makes perfect as they say and when it comes to performing with the American accent. A lot of us are striving for that ‘perfect’ accent.

The problem with striving for perfection is we may be striving for something that is unnecessary. Yes, we want to sound authentic speaking and performing with an American accent but perfection isn’t always the best option.

Instead, strive for authenticity because authentic speakers have imperfections. We are not perfect and that’s what makes each individual speaker unique. There is no one perfect way to sound American so instead let’s strive for consistency in our practice so that we build the muscle memory to sound like authentic speakers.

Daily Practice is one of the keys to mastering this accent. Now some days you may have less time to practice. Perhaps you are on the go, moving from audition to job to running errands…

If you don’t have the time to practice at home then make sure you practice on the go! Find fun & easy ways to add some practice into your on-the-go lifestyle. Here’s my top tips to get you started.

Top tips for on the go practice

  1. Reading streets signs out loud
  2. Having a conversation with someone
  3. Quick warm up of the articulators
  4. Tongue Twisters
  5. Listen to a podcast and repeat what your hear

You see, you don’t always need to spend an hour a day working on your accent BUT you do need to be practicing everyday. So don’t let your busy-ness be an excuse. Practice on the go today!
